Team RV traveled to Traverse City, MI for our first appearance at the National Cherry Festival Air Show July 2-3. Flying over the cool blue waters of Grand Traverse Bay proved to be a treat for us as well as the crowd.
After Friday morning media and sponsor rides, rehearsal provided a crucial familiarization to the boundaries of the aerobatic box set within the half-moon bay. A Friday night 12-ship delta formation flyby over Wuerfel Park kicked off a home game for local minor league baseball team Beach Bums, and then a visit to the park allowed Team pilots to interact with kids and parents and build excitement for the air show. Thanks for including our seven team members who are veterans in your tribute to service men and women during the 7th Inning Stretch.
Beach shows like this one are special to pilots because even if the winds are strong, turbulence is usually abated over the water. On the other hand, reference points are less well defined and flight leads in particular need to maintain acute situational awareness of the aerobatic box and the horizon as they lead the 12 aircraft of Team RV through formation aerobatics and difficult rejoins. Many thanks to National Cherry Festival Chairman Tim Hinkley, Air Show Director Bob Buttleman, and the many committee members, sponsors, and family who welcomed Team RV with open arms in Traverse City. From the time we arrived in TVC on Thursday to our departure Sunday after the show, we felt right at home -- we are ready for 2012!
